Our Swedish neighbors are proud of Elfrida Andrée. She was the first musical talent to win the post of cathedral organist in her homeland: even the reactionaries who were outraged by a woman in the gallery capitulated to her skills, and the critics who commented on her compositional work found very kind words - even for the first symphony performed in 1869, which the composer later dismissed as a "youthful work". An undisputed success, however, was the Fritiof Suite, whose five movements Elfrida Andrée removed from her (only) opera Fritiof Saga in 1909: unlike the stage work from 1898, the "pictures" once enjoyed great popularity, as they sound like fantastic incidental music to the Fritiof epic by the poet Esaias Tegnér, which to some extent every child in Sweden knew.
