Popis
Sting with a classical album? That must be a misunderstanding, you will surely think. But anyone who knows Sting - one of the world's most renowned pop artists more closely - knows about his love of classical music, which he has been involved with for many years. And now the small sensation is perfect, the first classical album with songs by John Dowland is released by Deutsche Grammophon Together with the Bosnian lute player Edin Karamazov, who also accompanied Andreas Scholl, Sting presents "Songs From The Labyrinth". The pop singer came across Dowland's songs in the early 1980s, when his guitarist Dominic Miller gave him a lute. Subsequently, Sting discovered the Elizabethan musician as one of the first singer-songwriters in English music history, whose songbooks have been incredibly successful throughout Europe. "The songs of John Dowland have haunted me in a gentle way for over twenty years," Sting explains. "To me, they're pop songs written at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, and that's how I understand them." In addition to the songs, Sting quotes excerpts from Dowland's letters on the CD. Thus, according to Sting, "Songs From The Labyrinth" gives the listener "an understanding of Dowland himself... and a musical soundtrack of his life."
