This recording brings together three important representatives of the sensitive style generation. As a reaction to the late Baroque of Bach and Handel, they systematically focused on contrasts and extreme juxtapositions in their compositions. This avant-garde style only remained in fashion for a short time, but anticipated many important aspects of early Romanticism. The album combines a harpsichord concerto by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (the eldest son of Johann Sebastian Bach) with two concertos by the Bohemian composer Georg Benda. These perfectly illustrate the sensitive style, which can quickly alternate between excitement and melancholy, furious frenzy and cheerful serenity. The program concludes with large solo harpsichord pieces by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach as well as an adagio and a fugue for orchestra by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, which demonstrate the composers' skills in the stile antico.
