Parsifal, the masterpiece that Wagner composed exclusively for the Bayreuth Festspielhaus and did not want performed anywhere else, was presented in a celebrated new production on the Green Hill in 2023. Pablo Heras-Casado, who made his Bayreuth debut, was celebrated for his interpretation, as was the magnificent cast of Andreas Schager, Elīna Garanča, Georg Zeppenfeld and Derek Welton. Director Jay Scheib takes Wagner's phrase from a letter to King Ludwig II at its word: he stages Parsifal as a "farewell to the world", as a work that poses the question of how hope can exist when life has long since ceased to be possible .. The 4-CD set contains two booklets: one contains information about the work, the staging in Bayreuth 2023 and photos of the production, the other contains the complete German libretto with English translation.
