Víkingur Ólafsson - "the new superstar of classical piano", according to the Daily Telegraph - wowed the world with the release of his first three albums - Philip Glass Piano Works (2017), Johann Sebastian Bach (2018) and Debussy Rameau (2020). Now the award-winning Icelandic pianist turns his attention to the music of Mozart. On Mozart & Contemporaries, his fourth album for Deutsche Grammophon, Ólafsson views classical music through the prism of contemporary programming. He juxtaposes his favourite Mozart works, including the C minor Sonata K. 457 and the B minor Adagio K. 540, with pieces by outstanding contemporaries of the composer - music by Haydn, C. P. E. Bach and also the Italians Galuppi and Cimarosa, who are rarely heard in recordings. The Mozart works come from the composer's last ten creative years, and it is these that fascinate Ólafsson: "In this phase Mozart not only brought the classical tradition to a climax, but also subverted it quite subtly ... The shadows are darker, the nuances and ambiguities more profound."
