Following Das Spitzentuch der Königin and Der Carneval in Rom, Prinz Methusalem now represents the third discovery of an unknown operetta by Johann Strauss on cpo. All three works have a common theme: artists and the artist’s life. Strauss deliberately designed his Methusalem for the Paris stage. After a French version of Die Fledermaus was already in preparation, he set his hopes on his very first Paris premiere, but the contract was never signed, with the result that this operetta first saw the light of the stage world in Vienna. The Viennese press immediately remarked that Strauss’s most recent work »everywhere should achieve a significant success, the most perhaps in Paris, for he evidently had French taste in mind in this work.« Even the strict Eduard Hanslick was enthused by this music full of esprit and termed Strauss the »irresistible Pied Piper of Vienna.« Prihlásenie
