The second trilogy by Philip Glass is "Satyagraha." The opera is semi-narrative and based on the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi, chronicling the peace fighter's early years in South Africa. ("Satyagraha" is Sanskrit and means "persistent adherence to the truth.") The first two acts each contain three scenes; the last is a continuous scene. Each act is dominated by a historical figure (non-singing role) who views the action from above: the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore in the first act, the Russian author Leo Tolstoy in the second act, and the American civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. in the third act In the context of a traditional orchestra, Glass used a large string section for the first time in "Satyagraha."
