It is these very early Ahmad Jamal recordings for the Epic label that have been somewhat lost in jazz history. His trio with bass and drums was to become much more famous in the clubs, at festivals and in TV productions from the mid-1950s onwards.
This LP contains twelve tracks, each in a trio with guitar and bass or drums - Ray Crawford, Eddie Calhoun, Walter Perkins are only known to a few jazz fans - of which only a few are original compositions, the majority are standards from musicals of the time. Ahmad Jamal reveals the influence of Art Tatum and Nat King Cole in his playing, but his later mastery and independence are already hinted at. The trio are both a real unit, although the hierarchy is maintained: Ahmad Jamal remains the boss, playing the bulk of the solos.
The first version of "Billy Boy" is certainly a highlight. Miles Davis was not the only one to praise the pianist for his technique and ingenuity. But "Aki And Ukthay" (brother and sister) also provides an opportunity to admire the pianist's skills.
It is certainly a good choice to bring these early recordings back to the ears of jazz lovers. Especially as Epic was and is a very underrated label on the record market. The recording and playback quality also leaves nothing to be desired.
Recording: 1951 and 1955
