A Celebration of The Mahavishnu Orchestra. The idea was unusual. No one had dared to adapt the music of John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra for a big band before. Perhaps the supposed difference between a guitar-oriented fusion band and the brass-driven sound of a big band seemed too great. Under the direction of English sound magician Colin Towns, the hr-Bigband succeeds in penetrating right into the heart and soul of the explosive spirituality of John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra. Towns is able to infuse the spirit of the Seventies into a new millennium listening world without any loss of energy. With drummer Billy Cobham and violinist Jerry Goodman, the project has two authorities who virtually predestine it for this difficult undertaking. The album is a lively piece of musical history appropriation, which gets along without nostalgia and misunderstood hero worship.
