For some time now, writes viola virtuoso Mathis Rochat in the foreword to this new release, he has been thinking about arranging Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Cello Concerto in B flat major for his own use. Although this is a "somewhat daring transcription", the position of the solo part could be easily transferred to the viola and played on it with great ease. Which was to be proven!
In fact, the young Swiss composer lends the "higher-pitched" composition a momentum and elasticity from which the already supple, melodious music can only benefit. And all the more so as it thus provides an excellent "overture" to the two subsequent works that Bach's colleague Johann Gottlieb Graun, eleven years his senior, intended for the viola: Sometimes flanked by its smaller sister, as in the quietly storming and urgent C minor concerto, then again in sole competition with the string orchestra, the often underestimated instrument also reveals a wealth of facets in the music of the Berlin court musician that need not hide behind its higher and lower rivals.
