Actually, Paul Wranitzky or better: Pavel Vranicky from Mühren should have become a priest. But soon he turned completely to music - and that was good, because he became one of the most respected Viennese composers and conductors. Haydn had him conduct his "Creation," Beethoven his first symphony; Leopold II and Franz II appreciated his works, the great public loved them; and those who published his stuff did not deal in lemons. But no sooner had Wranitzky succumbed to a typhoid infection in September 1808, at the age of barely 52, than things went quiet for him: a few of his more than 50 symphonies, some chamber music, but above all his first and most successful opera Oberon - King of the Fairies still kept his name in memory until the merciless rollers of fashion overtook him.
