Paul Wranitzky, Mozart's brother freemason, was a favorite composer of the Viennese court, for whom he wrote exclusive compositions. Wranitzky was a composer of character with a masterful sense of orchestration, but his sudden death in 1808 left his legacy overshadowed by his contemporaries Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The mature C major Symphony is a fine example of the composer's abilities, and the finale of the D major Symphony comes to life in fine Janissary style with triangle, cymbals and Turkish drum.
