Pianist Peter Friis Johansson has brought together renowned musicians, including violinist Johan Dalene and soprano Sofie Asplund, for a program that juxtaposes three generations of Swedish composers. The vocal and chamber works performed here bear witness to the special position of these genres in Swedish art music and to the vitality of musical societies at the beginning of the 20th century, which aroused an interest that went far beyond easily digestible music.
Andreas Hallén is the oldest of the composers presented here. Despite its early date, his piano quartet shows great self-assurance. Like many composers of his generation, Hallén liked to draw on folk elements. Wilhelm Stenhammar created an important and varied oeuvre. His violin sonata reflects the ideals of his German training: it is absolute music without explicit extra-musical content, a "synthesis of classical music and sensitive poetry", as his first biographer put it.
Sara Wennerberg-Reuter is the least known of the three composers; many of her scores have remained unpublished. As Stockholm's only permanent organist, she left behind a diverse oeuvre that encompasses a broad stylistic palette. Her melodic style, which she regarded as something rare at the time, set her apart from her contemporaries.
