Richard Strauss is considered both the last "classical" composer and a pioneer of modernism. His extensive oeuvre bears witness to one of the most successful and influential composers of the 20th century. His spirited and compact 1st Horn Concerto was composed in his youth, while the 2nd Horn Concerto was composed six decades later and reflects the expressive, lyrical and dynamic character of its youthful predecessor. Both concertos have the chamber orchestra character of the "Four Last Songs" in the arrangement by Eberhard Kloke in common. The Andante in C major and the Alphorn in E flat major, originally composed with piano accompaniment, are performed here in arrangements for chamber orchestra by Lars Opfermann.
