Archie Shepp needs no introduction - without a doubt he is one of the greatest African-American saxophonists and one of the last living jazz legends of the 20th century. For 30 years he has divided his time between Europe and the University of Massachusetts, where he teaches music history. After being one of the driving forces of avant-garde jazz in the 60s, in the wake of Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane, Archie Shepp was drawn back to the musical roots of his origins: the blues. Today, as an instrumentalist and as a singer, he is one of the most important interpreters of this genre. This tireless champion of Afro-American culture is one of New Morning's oldest and most loyal friends. in 1978, it was he who inaugurated the great stage of the New Morning in Geneva - the very place where the concert of this DVD was recorded in August 1994. Joining him were Horace Parlan, Wayne Dockery and Steve McCraven. The 21-minute bonus track "Sweet Bird of Youth" (recorded in Paris in 2001) is a special treat: Archie Shepp and his band are accompanied by the Moroccan quartet Les Gnawas de Tanger.
