Miles Davis' adaptation of the famous Gershwin musical "Porgy And Bess" is interpreted by him so touchingly and lyrically that arranger Gil Evans is said to have burst into tears several times during the studio recordings in July and August 1958. A year later, Otto Preminger filmed the material with Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge and Sammy Davis Jr. in the leading roles, but decided to use the arrangements of André Previn, who stuck more closely to the orchestration of George Gershwin, for the realization of the music.
