Popis
In 1650, seven years after Claudio Monteverdi's death, the Venetian publisher Alessandro Vincenti decided to compile Messa a quattro voci et salmi with the help of Francesco Cavalli, a pupil and successor of Monteverdi. It was a unique homage to Monteverdi. At a time when retrospectives were not fashionable, the preservation of written music was rare and the names of deceased musicians were mostly quickly forgotten, Monteverdi's fame seemed to last for a long time. Monteverdi himself had compiled the collection Selva Morale et Spirituale in 1641. Perhaps he regarded these as the great treasures of his oeuvre. But there must have been many more. After all, music was always written for the Liturgia Horarum and for special occasions, and Monteverdi was no exception to this practice. Cavalli and Vincenti had a wide choice when compiling this beautiful set, to which Cavalli added his own Magnificat. In addition to the Messa a quattro - church music in the old contrapuntal style - there are many other beautiful pieces of music. We find the Confitebor in two different versions (Monteverdi constantly modified existing pieces), which gives us a nice insight into his working methods. We also know that Monteverdi used the old contrapuntal techniques in his church music. Good examples of this are the Laudate pueri, Laetatus sum, Nisi Dominus II and the Lauda Jerusalem for 5 voices. In contrast to this are the works in which he looked to the future and translated concertante practice into psalms such as Nisi Dominus I and the rousing Beatus vir. In Laetatus sum, he allows the infinite possibilities to resound over an infinitely repeating bass. The second CD begins with a mass that was written as the opening piece for the Marian Vespers: the Messa in illo tempore. And this brings us full circle. In 1610, Monteverdi began a career as a church musician that was characterized until the end of his life by the enormous variety of styles he used. We should be grateful that Cavalli and Vincenti, perhaps driven by commercial interests, have left us this additional treasure. Other information: - Recorded in February 2021, October 2022, January and June 2023 in the St. Martinuskerk, Hoogland, Netherlands. - Booklet in English contains liner notes by director Krijn Koetsveld and profiles of the ensemble and its conductor. - Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) composed two groundbreaking masses that demonstrate his innovative approach to sacred music. "Missa in illo tempore" and "Messa a 4 da cappella" reflect the transitional period between the Renaissance and Baroque. Monteverdi skillfully combined traditional polyphony with expressive harmonies and strong contrasts, foreshadowing the dramatic tendencies of the Baroque. The masses display a deep spirituality, with moments of serene beauty and glowing intensity. Monteverdi's ingenious use of vocal and instrumental color, coupled with his daring harmonic progressions, cements his reputation as a musical pioneer whose work paved the way for the Baroque splendor to come. - With this new recording, Le Nuove Musiche, under the direction of Krijn Koetsveld, presents a new highlight of their Monteverdi pilgrimage, the planned recording of Monteverdi's complete works. Their recording of all madrigals received excellent reviews in the international press: "5 stars" (Volkskrant), "A polished, well-balanced sound ... consistently musical and intelligent" (Alte Musik), "Another convincing edition ... consistently excellent" (Klassik. com), "Performance: 10th ... an incredibly beautiful, excellent recording ..." (Dutch magazine Luister). - "Le Nuove Musiche easily stands comparison with most renowned ensembles in this particular repertoire. We hear everything: great vocal talent, pronounced imagination, pure text fidelity and diction, sharp-edged articulation alongside supple phrasing, the ever-rhythmic rhythm with its striking entries and that perfect sense of balance." (Opus Klassik).
