From the ancient stage to lyrical tragedy, the figure of Medea has stood the test of time. She embodies the epitome of the betrayed heroine who falls prey to destructive madness through the pain of her soul.
Based on the opera by Charpentier and Corneille (1693), the avant-garde libretto by Abbé Simon-Joseph Pellegrin offers an emancipated interpretation of the classical myth in which Medea controls her own magic and fate. Salomon's score responds to this with a magnificent tonal language that is oriented towards the tradition of Lully and at the same time anticipates the genius of Rameau.
With the rediscovery of this missing link between two eras, Reinoud Van Mechelen presents us with a spectacular lyrical tragedy that reveals the impressive complexity of a woman who is both powerful and tormented.
