She played them to me and explained that both songs were by Stephen Foster. I've often wondered how my mother felt about this moment - what was she thinking? Because through this little ritual, something very significant happened in my life. A spark was ignited in my soul and my imagination, and I began to pay attention to songs and the craft of songwriting. As I grew older, I was introduced to many great songwriters - some of them were favorites of my mother, many others I discovered on my own. Here's the point: it's about the song. It's about the song.
