For "Paris" Isabelle Geffroy aka Zaz worked with none other than Quincy Jones. When he talked to bandleader John Clayton about Zaz's blues voice during the recording of the album, they came to the conclusion that she sounded as if she was singing herself warm in a Baptist church. Qunicy Jones, with a wink, let himself be carried away by the great compliment that Zaz sounds like she's from the ghetto!
The term chanteuse sounds somehow venerable and old. Zaz, on the other hand, is above all a likeable bundle of energy. You can feel that when she's on stage and when you watch her wonderful promotional video for "Paris" on YouTube. And that explains the next compliment she received from Charles Aznavour, with whom she sings a duet on "Paris," "J'aime Paris au mois de Mai." Aznavour compares her - as so many do - to Edith Piaf, but sees the similarity less in voice than in personality. For him, Isabelle Geffroy is above all a generous person who pays attention to her audience and therefore receives the greatest recognition and enthusiasm in return: "Zaz has a natural attraction, she can sing anything and touches your innermost soul."
"Paris" as the theme of Zaz's new CD, makes the hearts of Paris fans beat faster. Classics like "Champs Elysées" sound new and fresh in Zaz's jazzy sound. Also the advance coupling "Paris sera toujours Paris" is dedicated to the metropolis and a declaration of love to the city. However, the music video gives the chanson an additional ironic meaning. I Love Paris/J'aime Paris" also succeeds beautifully in the congenial duet with Nikki Yanofsky. But what are we writing and reading here for so long: the whole record is fun.
