In his later stage works, Franz Lehár liked to replace the genre's usual happy ending with a bittersweet ending filled with painful doubts. In contrast, the ending of the operetta Schön ist die Welt, which premiered in 1930, cannot be surpassed in its clarity: Crown Prince Georg and Princess Elisabeth, who are destined for marriage by their father and aunt respectively, do not want to go along with this arrangement, end up together in a mountain hut without knowing each other, fall in love and realize in the end that the world is quite beautiful after all. In this piece, Lehár pulls out all the stops of his art, surprises with the most modern entertainment dances and indelible melodies and once again proves himself to be a master of skillful recycling by bringing the second act of a once unsuccessful story to new, glamorous life.
