On their trio debut, singer and violinist Alice Zawadzki, pianist Fred Thomas (who also plays the historical fiddle and drums here) and bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado present a rare alchemy that fuses folk idioms from a wide variety of origins with free-flowing interplay and flexible structures.
The trio is thus surrounded by an independent spectrum of styles and sounds that combines folk song, chamber music, improvisation and jazz, and on Za Górami they combine all these qualities into a fascinating whole. Sephardic songs can be heard as well as impressive interpretations of Gustavo Santaolla's "Suéltate Las Cintas" and Simón Díaz's "Tonada De Luna Llena". "Za Górami" - the traditional Polish song that gives the album its name - is heard in a poignant version by Zawadzki himself, and the Renaissance piece "Je Suis Trop Jeunette" finds a kindred spirit in the monody-inspired Fred Thomas setting of James Joyce's "Gentle Lady". The album was recorded at the Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano and produced by Manfred Eicher.
