"A completely new world of sound opened up to me. I had never heard early music like this before: so colorful, so immediately moving," says violist Martin Stegner about his first experience with Monteverdi together with Wu Wei, the master of the sheng, the traditional Chinese mouth organ. The variety of sounds that Wei can elicit from his instrument is remarkable, as is the tonal fusion of sheng, viola and double bass in this Chinese-German-Finnish trio. Bassist Janne Saksala, who like Stegner is also a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker, shares the violist's joy of improvisation. On this recording, the trio plays Claude Monteverdi's Si dolce è'l tormento and Pur ti miro from L'incoronazione di Poppea, J. S. Bach's Organ Trio Sonatas Nos. 1 and 4 and Antonio Vivaldi's Trio Sonata in D minor, complemented by a Norwegian folk tune. The musicians "explore the freedom that music offers.
