The Danish String Quartet's new album is a "musical quest across the North Sea, a journey through the sounds of the traditional music of Northern Europe, taking us from Denmark and Norway to the Faroe Islands and on to Ireland and England." Keel Road follows Last Leaf, the acclaimed Danish String Quartet album from 2017, which was voted "Classical Album of the Year" by NPR and "Best of the Year" by publications such as the New York Times and Gramophone magazine. Keel Road emphasizes the group's belief that "folk tunes are not just a part of our repertoire, but an important element of our identity as musicians." Subtly integrated into the flow of the recording are traditional pieces as well as original compositions by Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen and Fredrik Schøyen Sjölin and captivating arrangements by the musicians of four compositions by Turlough O'Carolan, the legendary harpist from County Meath in Ireland. The program highlights both musical affinities and their subtle differences, because although folk music "represents local traditions and local histories, it is also the music of everywhere and everyone". Keel Road was recorded at Village Recording Studio in Copenhagen in November 2022 and mixed at Bavaria Musikstudios in Munich in March 2024
