Mykola Hobdych
With Maidan, Valentin Silvestrov continues his longstanding collaboration with ECM, presenting choral music that hits the mark. Like the albums Sacred Songs and Sacred Works, Maidan includes compositions for vocal ensemble and features the Kyiv Chamber Choir conducted by Mykola Hobdych in a 2016 performance from St. Michael's Cathedral in Kyiv
Silvestrov, who was forced to leave his home in Kyiv, where he had lived for more than half a century, in the spring of 2022, composed "Maidan 2014," a "cycle of cycles," in the wake of "Euromaidan" - the wave of demonstrations that shook Ukraine in 2014. Maidan is full of liturgical elements and verses by Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchencko, and offers a wealth of melodies with hymnal as well as chorale-like forms
In the accompanying text to the CD text Silvestrov explains: "It is no coincidence that a silent lullaby symbolically closes the 'Maidan 2014' cycle. For I cannot and do not want to duplicate the noise of this terrible war. Rather, I want to show how fragile our civilization is. With my music I try to guard, to preserve a peaceful day. Today, it seems to me, this should be the main concern of art."
The album is released on Silvestrov's 85th birthday.
