Gideon Klein: Lullaby
Magdalena Kožená presents a recital of Czech songs together with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. The first impression of Czech songs is of atmospheric nature scenes or stories about pretty peasant girls and village pranks, but the selection on this album shows that the imagination of Czech song composers reached much further. Bohuslav Martinů's 'Nipponari', for example, were inspired by Japanese culture, while his folksy Songs on One Page have a deeper meaning when you realize that he wrote them in the USA after fleeing the Nazi threat. His colleagues and contemporaries Hans Krása and Gideon Klein did not manage to escape. Both died in concentration camps. Krása's four orchestral songs in German show a fascination with nonsense verse typical of the avant-garde of the early 1920s. Klein's Wiegenlied goes back to Jewish folk songs, but shows an openness to French musical styles in its musical realization. And no Czech song concert without good old Antonín Dvořák, whose Evening Songs and Songs op. 2 are included. Many of these works are best known with piano accompaniment, but are presented here in orchestral formations. The Czech Philharmonic and Sir Simon Rattle bring out all the colors beautifully, while Kožená once again shows her mastery of folk singing.
