This extraordinary production of Prokofieff's ballet world success Romeo and Juliet impresses with a very unusual approach: on the one hand, a great deal of emphasis has been placed on the sensual love story between Romeo and Juliet, and on the other hand, San Francisco Ballet discovers here the event character of the dramatic story surrounding the Capulets and the Montagues.
Heartfelt love scenes are contrasted by event-style sword fights, stunning long shots, an outstanding costume effort, and a compelling musical performance. Since its premiere in 1994, this performance has already thrilled 200,000 people around the globe! Helgi Thomasson's choreography is a visually powerful projection of Prokofieff's dramatic music.
Particular attention has been paid to the reconstruction of Verona's Renaissance cityscape. With Maria Kochetkova, and David Karapetyan, the San Francisco Ballet offers its best soloists for this performance, which was recorded live in San Francisco in 2015.
