Over the course of her long life, Johanna Senfter has enriched almost all "classical" genres, from chamber music to large-scale symphonic music, with her creations, all of which are characterized by one real feature - a harsh, almost austere beauty that runs the entire gamut from deep intimacy to that whimsical humour with which the composer's teacher repeatedly surprised her: Max Reger, the heavyweight workhorse from the Upper Palatinate, was extremely impressed by the creative abilities of his pupil, whose progress he was unfortunately unable to follow for too long. No doubt one or two of the turns of phrase would have seemed familiar to him in his "experience"; but he would certainly not have denied that the daughter from a good family had asserted her character.
