Following his virtuoso double bass concertos, we now turn our attention to three string quartets by Johann Matthias Sperger. Just as musicologists of earlier generations, who took a closer look at Sperger's compositional style, noted the proximity to Mozart, and even more so to Haydn, this can also be observed here in the string quartets. However, even more far-reaching demands are made on the viola and cello, which often take over virtuoso passages and merge into thematic material. Sudden, striking Mozartian themes come as a surprise - echoes from the opera "Figaro" and echoes of imitated Janissary music from Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio" can be heard: Spirited, spherical with heavenly, graceful melodies!
