Emilio de' Cavalieri's Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo was first performed in Rome in 1600. It was conceived for performance in costume, bringing text and music together in a dramatic form, and is considered the first extant opera to predate the works of Peri and Monteverdi. Its theme is the dialogue between soul and body, a central concept of the Italian Counter-Reformation, presented in allegorical form.
