The Sidewinder, Lee Morgan's 24-bar blues with an infectious bass line and backbeat, instantly became one of the most popular tunes in modern jazz history. Every track on this classic album is a gem. With "The Sidewinder" he released an album on Blue Note that immediately secured his place in the jazz Olympus.
Lee Morgan's magnum opus The Sidewinder - recorded in 1963 and released in 1964 - was both a comeback and a crowning achievement. The prodigious trumpeter had made his Blue Note debut in 1956 at the age of 18, but personal problems in the early '60s forced him temporarily off the stage. His comeback recording turned out to be The Sidewinder, an energetic and assured set of 5 indelible Morgan originals featuring tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Billy Higgins. The album became his biggest commercial success, fueled by the irrepressible title track.
