Danish trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg wrote this ambitious suite in praise of Miles, then in 1985 pulled off the coup of persuading him to record it. Neglected until its first issue in 1989, it now reappears with remastered sound and a new liner note by Mikkelborg. Aura manages to lend equal weight to ethereal atmospherics and theatrical pomp, Miles shooting off a welter of choice solos throughout, aided by guitarist John McLaughlin and bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. There is the feeling of a return to the scale of those late 1950s and early 1960s collaborations with Gil Evans. The suite is divided into spectrum themes, its "Intro" supplying a jagged synth-rush, grazed by McLaughlin's dirty fretwork. The skeletal fragility of "White" follows, Miles layering up echoed overdubs, curlicues of frosted exposure. The sharply bludgeoned awakening of "Yellow" ends with heavy drums thundering into "Orange", a rather stiff-backed strut that finds McLaughlin issuing further heated phrases. Miles sketches around the nimble lines of Pedersen's acoustic bass on "Green", then samples the reggae feel of "Blue" and the rock riffs of "Electric Red", withholding some of his best soloing for the closing "Violet".
