One of the best saxophonists in the world performs a set of covers with a top-notch band at the legendary New York venue. This is some of the most classic and exciting live music from a modern, small band ensemble you will hear today. 'Got the Keys to the Kingdom' is the new album by world-renowned saxophonist Chris Potter, recorded live at the Village Vanguard in February 2022. Since joining Edition Records in 2019, he has released two albums with his Circuits Trio (featuring James Francies and Eric Harland), as well as the multi-track solo album 'There Is A Tide.' Chris' latest album was recorded live with an all-star band consisting of Craig Taborn, Scott Colley and Marcus Gilmore at arguably the most famous and respected jazz club in the world. The new album is bursting with energy - in the moment and free. The tracklist features exclusively cover versions, often simple, upbeat, spiritual songs that go some way to expanding the music without losing the rawness of the original. Reinterpreted folk songs (Nozani Na, Olha Maria), powerful spirituals (Got the Keys to the Kingdom) and unusual jazz standards (Blood Count, Klactoveedsedstene) close out the multi-day residency. It's a track list that defies convention and gives the band room to experiment with some tunes that may not be so familiar to fans of the music; as Chris himself says - "these are tunes you don't normally play." The band plays with cohesiveness and spirit, with momentum and seamless flow. Craig Taborn's majestic soundscapes, Scott Colley's earthiness, and Marcus Gilmore's fiery pulse are commanding and captivating as they meld with Chris Potter's distinctively biting and nuanced playing. There is no doubt that Chris Potter is entering a new phase of his career. Since the suspensions interrupted his relentless touring schedule, Chris has had more time to practice and compose. The result is playing at the highest level - with utmost humility and character. The album was recorded at the historic Village Vanguard, and the sound of that incredible space and the energy of the audience are palpable. Close your eyes, tune in, and you can almost imagine yourself sitting within the hallowed walls of one of the world's most famous venues. Expect high energy, intensity, technical brilliance, exuberant joy and a snapshot of one of the world's greatest saxophonists in his element.
