In October 2024, the legendary British band Cymande announced their musical return with their first studio album "Renascence", which followed in January 2025.
"Renascence" is a true return to form and the crown jewel of their legendary discography. It picks up where their 1974 album "Promised Heights" left off - a spiritual and sonic successor that adds a fresh, modern twist to their legendary sound, which remains fundamental to the early hip-hop and funk scenes in the US and UK. "Renascence" tells the story of a band that never quite got the recognition it deserved back in the day; but is back to take the crown by staying true to itself - politically aware and spiritually positive with infectious grooves.
"Chasing An Empty Dream" is the first single to be released from Renascence and is premiered by Chris Hawkins on 6 Music. It lures you back into the world of Cymande with an unforgettable grizzly bassline hook - very much in her vein - addictive percussion, global rhythms inspired by her diasporic origins, multi-layered horns and a powerful message for the world.
The band put on a fantastic show at "Later...With Jools Holland", performing the tracks "Chasing An Empty Dream" and "Bra". They performed alongside Nia Smith, Manic Street Preachers, Jerron Patxon and MØ. This will be their very first appearance on British television!
Earlier this year, Cymande's unique story was told for the first time on the big screen in the UK (via BFI) and in cinemas around the world with 'Getting It Back: The Story Of Cymande' (directed by award-winning director Tim Mackenzie-Smith). It features interviews with Mark Ronson, Laura Lee and Mark Speer (Khruangbin), DJ Maseo (De La Soul), Jazzie B (Soul II Soul), Loyle Carner and many more. The documentary also highlights the band's importance in the birth of hip hop, where many of their tracks have been sampled by the likes of Fugees, Wu-Tang Clan, De La Soul, MC Solaar and Queen Latifah.
