"Graz" features previously unpublished recordings of the young Nils Frahm at the beginning of his career. The album was recorded at the House of Music and Performing Arts at the University of Art in Graz as part of his final project.
Nils Frahm has quietly changed the musical landscape, reincarnating the centuries-old figure of the pianist-composer for a new generation of music fans. As Nils' word-of-mouth grew and grew, so did the pop-cultural profile of his instrument. To support this process, he founded Piano Day in 2015 with a team of like-minded friends, who have been releasing an album of piano recordings to celebrate one of humanity's greatest inventions
Graz is one such recording; an unheard snapshot of young Nils recorded at Mumuth, the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, in 2009 as part of the Thomas Geiger-produced dissertation Conversations for Piano and Room. While the decision was made at the time to keep the grand piano recordings from the Graz sessions under wraps, focusing instead on his close-miked, muted piano explorations that would become his acclaimed studio album Felt in 2011, two of the pieces - Hammers in particular - lived on as part of his live set, and... more.
