In May 2020, with much of the world suffering the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic, Robert Fripp began uploading the first of 52 individual soundscapes to his YouTube channel, streaming platforms and DGMLive. Titled Music For Quiet Moments, these once-a-week pieces created a space for reflection, offered a way to switch off from everyday worries, and provided a point of calm and perhaps a sense of hope in such troubled times. Released in the same order as originally, the recordings are now available in four sets of 2 discs each in miniature gatefold sleeves, with a 58-page booklet containing the artwork for each track and notes by Robert Fripp. Housed in a sturdy outer sleeve. By way of introduction, Fripp defines what he means by the term "quiet moment": "Quiet moments are when we take time to be still. Sometimes quiet moments find us. Stillness can be experienced with and through sound, in a place that is sacred to us, or perhaps on a crowded subway racing towards Piccadilly or Times Square. The quiet moments of my musical life that I express in Soundscapes are deeply personal and yet utterly impersonal: they speak to the concerns we share in our common humanity." Each of the 52 tracks are taken from Soundscapes' performances from 2004-2009 and from venues / performances as diverse as those for G3 (Satriani, Vai, Fripp), to Churchscapes (as the name suggests, concerts in churches), opening for Porcupine Tree and even performances at The Big Chill festival. These pieces are largely contemplative, ranging from a few minutes to a performance of "Elegy" in Nashville that lasted over 44 minutes. Each week, this music became a soft word-of-mouth success as listeners eagerly anticipated and discussed the weekly selections. Many encountered Soundscapes for the first time and were exposed to Fripp's music for the first time through the series.Although the series was not started with the idea of being anything other than a weekly succession of digital audio releases, when it was compiled and played back at a time when the series was nearing its end and all the material had been selected, it became clear that the series worked well as a single, stand-alone work.
