The German-American pianist Benjamin Lackner is back with a newly formed quintet, which he has put together for a particularly intensive recording session in Provence in spring 2024. With this top-class group, he presents a fresh and exciting side of his compositional range. Mathias Eick is the only returning member from Lackner's debut "Last Decade" and can be heard in striking duality with Mark Turner's idiosyncratic saxophone dialectic - a key feature of the interplay on "Spindrift". The wind duo and the pianist are joined by the internationally sought-after bassist Linda May Han Oh and the French drummer Matthieu Chazarenc, who has long been a member of Lackner's trio. Subtle fanfares meet contemplative lyricism in a program of original compositions in which melody and ensemble interplay always come first. Saxophone and trumpet take the lead, forming their own little unit and contributing to a particularly harmonious group sound and infectiously melodic pieces with elegantly interwoven lines and captivating solos.
