The 1981 debut of the legendary pianist of Eberhard Weber's Colours Band and later the Jan Garbarek Group, "Freigeweht", presented Rainer Brüninghaus as a highly original and idiosyncratic painter of sound, accompanied by ECM luminaries Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn and drummer Jon Christensen as well as oboist Brynjar Hoff. In a review of the album from the year of its release, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung attributed the pianist's influences and minimalist creativity to Steve Reich and called Brüninghaus "the most imaginative user of minimal art. (...) He uses minimal art neither as an ideology nor as a substitute for rhythm sections, but playfully and constructively as an element that can be taken up. The trumpeter Kenny Wheeler is the ideal partner as a brilliant outliner of the themes and an ingenious improviser." Jon Christensen lends uncompromising drive to Brüninghaus' lyrical themes, which are impressively underpinned by Wheeler and Hoff's contemplative tones.
The Luminessence Edition of "Freigeweht" is released in a tip-on gatefold and with new accompanying text.
