Stephan Micus is a unique musician and composer. He collects and studies instruments from around the world and uses them to create his own musical journeys
Here now is his 25th solo album for ECM, its sound dominated by the four-meter Tibetan Dung Chen trumpet - an instrument Micus recently learned and is using for the first time. The thunderous effect of this instrument led to the album's name and its nine tracks, which celebrate deities from around the world. "I dedicate this music to the great family of thunder gods around the world, in the humble hope that their destructive powers will somehow be appeased when they hear it," he says
The album features instruments from Tibet, India, Burma, Borneo, Siberia, Japan, South America, Gambia, Namibia, Sweden and Bavaria, all played by Stephan Micus, whose 70th birthday on January 19, 2023 coincides with this release.
