The first collection of the soul and pop icon
in 2021, the music world had to say goodbye to one of its icons: Mary Wilson. The American singer was a founding member of the Supremes, the most successful Motown band of the 1960s and the best-selling female group in the history of the US charts, with which she became a star.
"Mary Wilson: The Motown Anthology" is a special commemoration of the R'n'B, soul and pop diva in 2022, the first collection to celebrate the work of Mary Wilson. In a YouTube message to her fans recorded two days before her death in February 2021, Wilson shared the news: "I've finally decided how to work with Universal Records, and they're going to release new Mary Wilson recordings. Yes! Finally! Finally!"
The 2-CD set gathers 38 tracks, including numerous hits by the Supremes as well as deep cuts, new mixes and more. Collection highlights include the worldwide CD debut of her first solo album, 1979's "Mary Wilson," which was initially released digitally after her death, as well as seven previously unheard tracks: "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" and the newly available "Falling In Love with Love," taken from the Supremes' previously unreleased January 13 performance at the Frontier, "Send Him To Me," "If You Let Me Baby," "Son Of A Preacher Man," "Witchi Tai To" and "Anytime At All."
"Mary Wilson: The Motown Anthology" was supervised by Turkessa Babich, Wilson's daughter, and Jay D. Schwartz, her longtime publicist. The set is complemented by a 44-page booklet featuring rare and previously unpublished color photos. The booklet also includes detailed track notes and lyrics from well-known admirers, including Dionne Warwick, Darlene Love, Otis Williams, Duke Fakir, Martha Reeves, Claudette Robinson, Brian and Edward Holland, Paul McCartney, Rita Coolidge, Merry Clayton, Brenda Russell, Blinky Williams and RuPaul.
