"Watertown" may well be called Frank Sinatra's most ambitious concept album and at the same time a rather tricky work
Not only does it tell a comprehensive story, but it is also his clearest attempt at rock-oriented pop. Since the main composer of "Watertown" is Bob Gaudio, the author of the Four Seasons hits "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," "Walk Like a Man" and "Big Girls Don't Cry," this is not surprising
Together with Jake Holmes, Gaudio created a song cycle about a middle-aged man living in a small town whose wife has left him with the children. The songs, which consist of a series of short lyrical snapshots that read like letters or soliloquies, culminate in an atmosphere of loneliness, just such, however, without much hope or romance - it is the story of a broken man
Producer Charles Calello arranged a musical background, that underscores the desperation of the lyrics. Through the interplay of prominent electric guitars, keyboards, drums and bright strings, Calello uses pop/rock instrumentation and production techniques, but that doesn't stop Sinatra from warming up to the material. In fact, he delivers a wonderful performance, extracting every emotion from the lyrics and adding depth to the album's character.
All tracks have been remixed from the original session tapes. The LP edition includes the original 10-track sequence, a package with all original lyrics, a printed sleeve with new liner notes, a track-by-track breakdown by Mr. Gaudio and a 12" x 24" poster.
