"Moving Pictures" is the eighth studio album by the Canadian progressive rock band and was originally released on February 12, 1981. After touring in support of their previous album, "Permanent Waves" (1980), the band began writing and recording new material with co-producer Terry Brown in August 1980. They continued to write songs with a more radio-friendly format, with tighter song structures and shorter songs compared to their previous albums. The adventurous yet accessible music catapulted the Canadian band to even greater heights: "Moving Pictures" was the first number one album in their native Canada, also reaching number three in the US and also number three in the UK. Singles released from the album included "Tom Sawyer," which became one of Rush's most popular radio hits and held a place as a constant accompaniment at concerts in the decades to come; "Limelight," a prescient look at how introverted artists cope with the demands of the public; and "Vital Signs," a driving track that heralded some of the unusual musical tendencies Rush would make audible throughout the 1980s. The new Super Deluxe Edition of "Moving Pictures" includes three CDs, a Blu-ray audio disc and five 180-gram black LPs. The set includes the album's 2015 Abbey Road Mastering Studios remastered edition on CD for the first time, along with two discs of previously unreleased and newly restored bonus live content remixed from the original live analog multitracks by Rush's original producer Terry Brown, featuring the band's complete, unreleased Toronto concert from Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Ontario, on March 25, 1981 (referred to here as "Live In YYZ 1981"). The fourth bonus disc is a Blu-ray audio disc featuring the main album remixed from the original multitracks in Dolby Atmos (a first in the Rush catalog), Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound, as done by noted producer/engineer Richard Chycki, alongside the previously available PCM stereo mix. Also included on the Blu-ray are four bonus videos: a brand new video for "YYZ" and three remastered old promo videos for "Tom Sawyer," "Limelight" and "Vital Signs." In addition, all of the Super Deluxe Edition vinyl has been cut to five audiophile 180-gram LPs via Direct to Metal Mastering (DMM) at half speed (another first in the Rush catalog). The super deluxe edition also includes several exclusive pieces of content, including a 44-page hardcover book featuring unpublished photos and new artwork by original album designer Hugh Syme, as well as new illustrations for each song, extensive liner notes by Kim Thayil (guitarist, Soundgarden), Les Claypool (bassist/vocalist, Primus), Taylor Hawkins (drummer, Foo Fighters), Bill Kelliher (guitarist, Mastodon) and Neil Sanderson (drummer, Three Days Grace), a red Barchetta model car on a black pole with an MP40 shield, two MP40 drumsticks signed by Neil Peart, two guitar picks embossed in metal with the signatures of Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, a replica of the official Moving Pictures 1981 tour program, an enamel pin with the MP40 logo, a 3D lenticular "Moving Pictures in motion" lithograph, an 18×24-inch Toronto 1981 concert poster, a copy of the 1981 Maple Leaf Gardens show concert ticket, a 12×36-inch Rush "Through The Years 1973-1981" poster, a "YYZ" luggage tag and an "All Access World Tour '81" insert. All of the content is housed in a high-quality lift-top box that includes moving, redesigned cover artwork by Hugh Syme.
