"Everything I have succeeded in doing, I have done quickly," Donizetti once told librettist Giacomo Sacchiero. This is also the legend of La Favorita, whose fourth act is said to have been written in a single night after a good meal and the subsequent cup of coffee. The truth is different: In fact, Donizetti composed only 84 bars that night, the other music for this act being taken from two other operas not completed by Donizetti. But the composer succeeded in merging all the individual parts into a new unity, and on 2 December 1840 La Favorite had its premiere to the applause of the Parisian public.
