In England in the 18th century, November 22 was always celebrated with festive musical performances in honor of St. Cecilia in her capacity as patron saint of music. in 1739, Handel composed his Ode for St. Cecilia's Day, his second contribution to this feast after Alexander's Feast, and it was immediately recognized by contemporaries as a towering masterpiece. With first-rate soloists - Carolyn Sampson and Ian Bostridge - John Butt and his Dunedin Consort, in their third Handel recording for LINN, once again underscore their standing as outstanding interpreters of his music.
