Music Is Our Friend - named after the tour from which the recordings were taken - is an official bootleg containing the entirety of King Crimson's final North American performance in Washington in September 2021. The 2CD set is complemented by four tracks from the first concert of the second leg of the tour in Albany. Taken together, these tracks represent both the beginning and the end of a tour that took place despite almost insurmountable problems.
Originally scheduled for 2020 and postponed a full year due to the pandemic, the tour kicked off in Florida in July when the recent covid wave hit, leaving the band on a tour bus bubble across the country. After a two-week hiatus due to scheduling conflicts, they returned to the road, with the Zappa Band performing before Crimson each night. King Crimson now faced gigs that had to be rescheduled due to extreme weather conditions: a venue was flooded the day before the concert, an outdoor concert in New York was moved to the better-known Beacon Theatre, and even a band member was flown to the hospital by helicopter - King Crimson faced a series of difficult conditions. Fortunately, the band member made a full recovery, and despite the many setbacks and obstacles, no performances were missed. By the time King Crimson reached Washington, the band was in captivating form, playing a powerful, energetic program with some revamped arrangements that differed from those of previous tours
The middle section of "Larks' Tongues In Aspic Part One", which hadn't been played since 1973, was restored, there were extensive keyboard arrangements, Tony Levin on double bass during "Neurotica" which gave the piece an extra oomph, an emotional set-closer, "Starless" and a tremendously powerful "21st Century Schizoid Man" as an encore.
King Crimson ended their tour in style and to great acclaim from fans and critics alike. As Robert Fripp notes in his diary entry in the notes, "David (Singleton, KC manager/producer) pointed out that the very first piece KC played in the U.S. was at Godard College, Montpelier, Vermont on October 29, 1969, the same piece as it was completed. 1969, was the same piece KC performed with for 52 years - 21CSM".
Unlike the Washington show, the four performances of the "Friends and Family" concert in late August 2021 at The Egg in Albany, the opening concert of the second leg of the tour and the same venue where the current band played its first U.S. gig in 2014, have a more intimate feel. As befits a small venue and an invited audience, the sound and tempo provide an opportunity to hear a number of songs that were not played in Washington due to time constraints. The second disc opens with a poignant performance of "Islands" - perhaps the best recording of this song by this band. David Singleton, who also prepared all the audio for this release, considered this one of the best sets the band has played on this or previous tours.
