Popis
This recording of Keith Jarrett’s extraordinary solo performance at Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice in July 2006 is released as the pianist receives a unique accolade from one of that city’s great institutions. On September 29, The 62nd International Festival of Contemporary Music of the Biennale di Venezia honours Keith Jarrett with its Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. It’s the first time that a “jazz” musician has received this award, which has previously been given to contemporary composers including, in recent decades, Berio, Boulez, Kurtág, Lachenmann, Gubaidulina and Steve Reich. From the jury’s citation: “Unanimously acclaimed as one of the most important pianists in the area of improvisation and jazz music Keith Jarrett is an artist who has experimented with extraordinary talent and creativity in various genres, creating work that is both refined and blistering at the same time. His huge discography bears witness to a boundless art and a unique personality in the field of jazz, with an approach and signature style that are so personal as to make him a universal master in the history of music”. In the solo concerts, of course, Jarrett is also a contemporary composer, uncovering forms through the medium of improvisation. Like the earlier milestone recording La Scala (1995), La Fenice finds Keith Jarrett entering one of the hallowed halls of classical music and channelling the flow of inspiration to shape something new. In this case, a suite of eight spontaneously created pieces referencing everything from the blues to atonality. In between Part VI and Part VII, Jarrett surprisingly but touchingly segues into “The Sun Whose Rays”, from Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera The Mikado. Encores are the traditional tune “My Wild Irish Rose” (previously recorded by Jarrett on The Melody At Night With You), the timeless standard “Stella By Starlight” and a wonderful revisiting of “Blossom”, first heard on the Belonging album.
