Daniil Trifonov, "one of the most impressive pianists of our time" (New York Times) releases his eagerly awaited Tchaikovsky album!
In it, the star pianist explores selected works by Tchaikovsky for solo piano. These reveal the more intimate, private side of the romantic composer, because "Tchaikovsky was not a sullen eccentric, but cultivated very cheerful friendships, especially in his younger years, and found great emotional support in his family," says Trifonov.
The album includes the early Piano Sonata in C sharp minor, "an unjustly overlooked masterpiece", which is rich in changing moods and original ideas, the Thème original et variations in F major and the Children's Album op. 39. Together, these works provide an insight into what Daniil Trifonov calls Tchaikovsky's "private level" - "a spirit shaped by memories of youth and family". The album ends with the colorful Suite from Sleeping Beauty. This was written in 1978 by the then 21-year-old pianist and conductor Mikhail Pletnev, who won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in the same year - just like Trifonov 33 years later in 2011 with a spectacular victory. For Daniil Trifonov, Pletnev's transcription for solo piano of highlights from the popular Tchaikovsky ballet is "a masterful piano work in itself".
