In a total of ten pieces, Christian Löffler takes a deeper look at recordings from the Deutsche Grammophon shellac era. As with his reworks for the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, the German composer has drawn on digitized original recordings from the 1920s and 30s for his album "Parallels: Shellac Reworks." His goal is to bring great masterpieces of music history into the present and, with his modern interpretations, make them accessible to people who don't normally listen to "old masters."
A glimpse of Löffler's extraordinary work, can already be gained with his "Beethoven Reworks". They will close Löffler's album "Parallels". The Beethoven Reworks are preceded by arrangements of recordings by J. S. Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Wagner, Smetana and Bizet. Löffler has chosen the works for various reasons, some of them personal, but he has always analyzed the recordings with the same care: Löffler has filtered out characteristic patterns in the music, whether rhythmic or melodic, and used them as the basis for his contemporary version.
Together with Google Arts and Culture, Deutsche Grammophon has extensively restored and digitized all shellac recordings for the label's 120th anniversary. It was only through this groundbreaking "Shellac Project" that the experimental album "Parallels: Shellac Reworks" could be realized in this form.
