Mikhail Shapiro’s classic 1967 film marked the official acceptance of Shostakovich’s operatic masterpiece Katerina Izmailova (the composer’s re-working of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, which had incurred Stalin’s displeasure and put Shostakovich’s life at risk). Featuring a newly-restored print and available for the first time outside Russia, this widescreen presentation of Shostakovich’s “dark and deadly” drama starts the great Russian soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, as the eponymous murderess.
