Popis
'Appearing Nightly' by Carla Bley & her Remarkable Big Band (as the cover puts it) is a resolutely contemporary performance of nostalgia-inflected material, recorded live "in living stereo" at Paris' New Morning club in 2006. "We couldn't bring back the past, but this was a chance to pay our respects to the wonderful big bands and great American songwriters that dominated American popular music in the first half of the 20th century", says Carla Bley. It features rich and robust performances of new Bley material (plus an arrangement of a Ray Noble chestnut) with particularly stellar contributions by saxophone soloists Andy Sheppard and Wolfgang Puschnig, by trumpeter Lew Soloff, and trombonist Gary Valente. The centrepiece is the 25-minute title track "Appearing Nightly at the Black Orchid", commissioned for the Monterey Jazz Festival and heard here in a premiere recording. This major work reflects on Carla's first musical engagement as a pianist back in the 1950s, and alludes to the atmosphere of the jazz clubs of the day. There is also plenty of humour in Carla's "Greasy Gravy/Awful Coffee", (which quotes briefly and liberally from other songs about food and drink such as "Salt Peanuts", "You're the Cream in My Coffee", "Watermelon Man", "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries", and "Tea for Two") while the spirit of Gershwin informs Carla's "Someone To Watch". And Ray Noble's "I Hadn't Anyone Till You" is a rare instance of Carla arranging another musician's work. Carla Bley's last album 'The Lost Chords Find Paolo Fresu' was one of her most successful, universally loved by the critics (it won the Choc de l'Annee 2007 in France) and a huge seller. The Lost Chords rhythm section of Steve Swallow and Billy Drummond also drives the big band. Personnel: Earl Gardner, Lew Soloff, Giampaolo Casati, Florian Esch - (trumpets), Beppe Calamosca, Gary Valente, Gigi Grata, Richard Henry - (trombones), Roger Jannotta - (soprano and alto saxophones, flute), Wolfgang Puschnig - (alto saxophone, flute), Andy Sheppard - (tenor saxophone), Christophe Panzani - (tenor saxophone), Julian Arguelles - (baritone saxophone), Carla Bley - (piano, conductor), Karen Mantler - (organ), Steve Swallow - (bass), Billy Drummond - (drums)
